So, for my birthday this year, that's exactly what we did.

We went to the flea market of all flea markets--Brimfield. We've had our share of fleas, but this one is special. Very special. I've never seen so many vendors packed into one space. We drove up late Friday night in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 65 miles along a winding, unlit road. However, what lay ahead helped us persevere and by 1 am we had made it to our hotel room.

Saturday we woke up bright and early and shopped for 6 hours. We bought mourning jewelry, antique toys, collectible cast iron bottle openers, metal baskets, a 1940s pajama set, and much much more. We even found decent vegetarian wraps to help us refuel! By the end of the day we were seriously exhausted.

On Sunday, we found ourselves magnetically drawn to the industrial section, but because of the limited space in the car we couldn't buy everything we wanted. We've decided to go back in July with a truck to fill our brownstone up with treasures!

Check out our hand-picked gift ideas from our vintage experts at our SoHo location.

Marietta - "There is a nice relationship thats built around a piece of jewelry. Jewelry is very personal and since my mom lives so far away I'd like to give her something so she can remember the occasion and the relationship."

Stacey - "My mom would love everything about this; the pink hue, the deco decadence... It's basically the perfect gift. Except she'd probably use it as a candy dish, versus an ashtray. She doesn't smoke."

Kate - "My mother would enjoy this book The Encyclopedia of Decorative Arts. She has always collected antique trinkets and art pieces for as long as I can remember, and I have learned all that I know about antique housewares from her and our days of flea marketing together. This book probably features some pieces that my mother even has herself!"

Lara - "My mother has impeccable taste, so she's difficult to buy for. What do you get the woman who has everything? An Hermes scarf is classic, effortless and timeless. I love this one for my mother because it's in her colors--deep reds, purples and a little coral for contrast. But my mother isn't the type to tie it around her shoulders, that's too matronly. I can see my mom tying this scarf around her neck like an ascot, and pairing it with a riding blazer or a smart trench. I could even see her tying it onto the strap of her favorite Prada bag, just like I would! There are so many ways to wear a scarf, which makes it a great gift. Add the cache of Hermes, and it's be a memorable gift."

Kody - "Every time I go home I manage to tear apart my mom's wardrobe because she is a bit of a sentimentalist (ahem... pack rat). With out fail, I find the best pairs of high waisted Levis; perfectly worn, perfectly torn, perfect. After creating an outfit from her clothes she cavalierly mentions how she wore the exact same thing to a party in the fields of the Kettle Moraine or to the Moody Blues concert at Alpine Valley--the only thing missing is Frye boots. She goes on to tell me that her boots were "her thing"--she wouldn't go far without her Fryes, but it was the one thing my grandmother managed to sell in a garage sale. Thus, if I were to buy anything for my momma from What Goes Around Comes Around it would be a kick a** pair of Fryes; black, brown, tan, distressed you name it--she would love them and dance around like it the summer of 1979."

Christian - "My mother has lived by the beach her whole life and has always enjoyed a life of simplicity and relaxation. I feel this bag describes her personality perfectly: light, simple, with a touch of class."

Kelly - "Ornate turquoise jewelry pairs so well with white lightweight pieces and tis the season! It makes a statement and can be paired with many outfits, including our Victoria Top in white."

Jade - "One of the many things I admire about my mother is her green thumb. She has always impressed me (and the neighbors) with her curated gardens. Our lilac buses are a notable smell of childhood memories and although I don't have a backyard to carry on to the legacy, I do seek her motherly advice when it comes to my indoor cactus. She is also a sun goddess at heart so Brixton sun hat would be the perfect gift. It's practical, fun, and a step up from her usual garden garb."

At the young age of 9, at a Madonna concert at Madison Square Garden (The Like a Virgin Tour in 1985), I was exposed to what would soon become one of the most influential hip hop acts of my generation and generations to follow. The opening act was The Beastie Boys. Although I went adorned in fingerless lace gloves and neon bracelets running up my arms, I had no clue that this band would soon pave the way as lyrical geniuses, innovators and musical pioneers.

As a native, half-Jewish New Yorker growing up in Long Island, it was only natural to relate to the first white rap group consisting of Jewish kids from Brooklyn and Manhattan. Their music was like nothing I had ever heard before. With fast, witty rhymes that blended Hip Hop with Rock and Roll, the Beastie Boys would forever evolve and go on to revolutionize music. They constantly referenced New York sports teams and local landmarks throughout the five boroughs. To me, they epitomized New York. You could not help but feel like you knew these guys, personally.

When I heard the news of Adam (MCA) Yauch’spassing, I immediately felt as if I lost one of my childhood friends. A piece of New York died, to me... a legend died. Adam had touched so many people, not just through music, but as a long time activist and humanitarian. He gave back so much, and then some.

The Beastie Boys were the 3rd rap group ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month and I am happy to know that Adam lived to see the day he was recognized amongst his peers.

I have always cherished each album that the Beastie Boys released, as each one reminds me of a specific moment in my New York life. I am honored to say that I saw them perform live 4 times. Thank you, Adam, for your words of wisdom and for being such an influential part of my life and the lives of so many others. Namaste.
