Change abounds at Céline. Last December LVMH announced that British fashion designer Phoebe Philo would no longer be creative director of Céline after nearly a decade. Phoebe became the creative director of the brand in 2008 and during her tenure she was named International Designer of the Year by CFDA in 2011. Three years later Time Magazine named her one of 100 most influential people in the world. Before Céline, Phoebe was the creative director of Chloé where she worked for nearly 10 years. When she left Chloé in 2006, she dedicated two years to spending time with her growing family. The famously elusive designer has not shared what she will do next.
This weekend, LVMH announced that Hedi Slimane will be joining Céline as its artistic, creative and image director giving him – what it seems – more power than his predecessor. Hedi is a French fashion designer and photographer with a rather impressive resume. From 2000 to 2007, he helmed Christian Dior’s menswear line Dior Homme. During his tenure at Dior he became the first menswear designer to receive the CFDA award for International Designer of the Year. In 2012, he became the creative director of Yves Saint Laurent. After making quite a ruckus at the brand, he left in 2016.
We are eager to see how Hedi’s rock and roll aesthetic will translate to a brand known for its minimalism and practicality. And, let’s not forget the brand’s baggage. Under Phoebe’s tenure Johnny Coca, Céline's head design director for leather goods, shoes, and accessories, spearheaded some of Céline’s most sartorial hits including the furry sandal revolution (aka furkenstocks) and some of the most iconic bags of the last decade. The Trapeze Bag and Luggage Tote were both awarded copyright protection to help deter counterfeiters. Meanwhile, the Céline Classic Box Bag was listed as one of The Handbags You Won’t Regret Investing In by Elle UK. There are even guides like this one from Marie Claire that help you decide which Céline bag is right for you. Now that both Phoebe and Johnny are no longer with Céline (Johnny left for Mulberry in 2015) Hedi has very fashionable shoes, bags and ready-to-wear to fill. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
Below are some of Céline's greatest hits.
