Nostalgia ran deep last night as some of Norma Kamali’s biggest fans showed up to a private event to unveil Vintage for the Future: A Norma Kamali Retrospective at What Goes Around Comes Around’s SoHo store. The wait is finally over for the anticipated collection of over 70 of her vintage pieces. The retrospective launched in tandem with the final days of New York Fashion Week. It’s only fitting to celebrate Norma – an industry vet – who has owned and operated an eponymous New York fashion brand for more than 50 years. Since the beginning, she has been an early adopter of technology and new ways of creating wearable design. Some of the trends we see now like athleisure style, low-cut swimsuits and puffer coats were inspired by some of her earlier work. She started out in the fashion industry selling vintage so she always had this idea in the back of her mind. “Ultimately, I wanted to create vintage for the future,” she told The Daily Front Row in an interview.
In a room full of millennial influencers, friends and life-long fans, she stood out in her merlot velvet suit and iconic bangs. Her smile and enthusiasm is truly contagious. Co-founder and global editor-in-chief of Refinery29 Christene Barberich referred to Norma as “one of my favorite people in the world.” She wrote on an Instagram post: “I still just FREAK OUT when I see how immense her influence in fashion has been… decade after decade, few people have had the influence on American fashion that Norma Kamali has had.” Christene was one of many fashion industry guests including supermodel Naomi Campbell, creator of New York Fashion Week Fern Mallis, and fashion influencers Mary Leest, Jenny Cipoletti of Margo & Me, Sophia Macks of Beyond The Mag and Tina Craig of Bag Snob. Tina told her followers on Instagram that she saved up her babysitting money for a red bikini. “A true icon and inspiration at age 72,” she wrote. “I’ve been wearing her clothes since my teens and I will continue to if it means I’ll look half as good as she does!”
