Introducing Pre-Loved David Yurman at WGACA

Few names in American jewelry are as instantly recognizable as David Yurman. Sculptural yet entirely wearable, David Yurman has defined generations of personal style. What Goes Around Comes Around’s latest drop of pre-loved and vintage David Yurman jewelry includes some of the brand’s most iconic pieces, all curated into one perfectly shoppable collection.

However, David Yurman is more than just a brand. Behind the New York City-based company is a couple who singlehandedly changed the face of luxury jewelry, and their legacy should be celebrated.

One is Silver and the other Gold

The story begins in New York City, with young David Yurman, who grew up in the Bronx. Yurman was born into a Jewish family and would describe himself as a "terrible student." At age 15, he met welder and sculptor Ernesto Gonzalez, who taught him welding techniques.

After spending a year enrolled at New York University, Yurman left the university and spent the next five years hitchhiking across the country. In the early 1960s, he apprenticed with sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and would go on to establish his own studio in Greenwich Village. There, he worked with various sculptors, including Theodore Roszak and Edward Meshekoff.

In the late 1960s, Yurman began working for sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp. In Bovenkamp's studio, he would meet painter and ceramicist Sybil Kleinrock. The pair hit it off as they both shared a passion for art and design.

In the early 1970s, the pair moved to Carmel, New York, and formed Putnam Art Works, with a focus on sculptural jewelry. The pair became key figures in the American Arts and Crafts movement during the decade. During this time the pair learned more about the marketplace for artisanal jewelry. In 1977, David was selected as an exhibitor at the first New Designer Gallery at the Retail Jewelers of America Show in New York.

David and Sybil would marry in 1979 and a year later established the David Yurman company.

David Yurman opened their first store in New York in 1999, and by 2000, debuted their first major advertising campaign. Today, the brand continues to resonate with a new generation of style icons, including ambassadors Michael B. Jordan, Shawn Mendes, Iris Law, and Eiza González.

Outside of jewelry, David Yurman is committed to making changes and bettering the world. In 2001, the David & Sybil Yurman Humanitarian and Arts Foundation was established and provides help and assistance to charitable initiatives.

The Iconic Craftsmanship of David Yurman

At the heart of every David Yurman design is meticulous craftsmanship. The brand is known for using high-quality 925 sterling silver. Often intentionally oxidized or “blackened,” the silver achieves depth and a distinctive, antique-inspired patina that enhances the iconic sculptural cable motif.

That cable motif symbolizes connection, strength, and continuity. First introduced in 1983, the Cable Collection quickly became the cornerstone of the brand and one of the most recognizable aesthetics in modern jewelry.

In 1997, the brand revolutionized the jewelry market by introducing sterling silver jewelry adorned with diamonds, aptly called the Silver Ice collection, becoming the first prominent designer to set precious stones in sterling silver.

Another enduring symbol, the X motif, was born in Sybil Yurman’s art studio when she painted bold brushstrokes across a canvas. David transformed that expressive gesture into a sculptural form. This is a prime example of how fine art and jewelry design continuously intertwine within the brand.
