How Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Redefined Modern Luxury
Whether you’re a fashionista or just casual yoga pants everyday kind of person, odds are you have a specific fashion inspiration. An individual, celebrity, musician, or athlete, who inspires your wardrobe, how you shop, all the way down to how you dress on a day-to-day basis.
We often manage to nail down one singular person to shape our wardrobe and sense of style, but what happens when a fashion inspiration comes as a package deal? This package deal we’re talking about is the Olsen Twins, of course! Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, inspirable since birth, have been in the public eye since they were infants, starring in the sitcom Full House and eventually launching a career that spanned across all forms of media.
Since the twins stepped away from acting in their teens, they have become synonymous with fashion, be it their street style, their iconic vintage bag collection, or their minimalist, quiet luxury clothing collections with The Row.
With the establishment of The Row and Elizabeth & James and their invitation to join the Council of Fashion Designers in 2009, it should come as no surprise that the pair are the perfect style icons, with a sense of style that knows no bounds. Let’s take a retrospective look at the career of the most famous and fashionable twins in history before we dive into their iconic bag collection.
From Child Stars to Fashion Icons
When the twins were just nine months old, they were cast on the hit 80s/90s sitcom Full House. The two remained on the show, playing the role of Michelle Tanner for eight years. While acting in Full House, the pair established themselves as popular child stars and capitalized on their fame by releasing films, books, and CDs, only growing their wealth and cementing their celebrity icon status.
When Full House concluded in 1995, the pair continued acting in television and film until 2004, with the release of their film New York Minute. The twins began a shift from acting to fashion, a shift that had been long coming; the twins launched a clothing line with Wal-Mart for young girls and were chosen as the faces of Badgely Mischka.
The twins were invited to the Met Gala in 2005, which further catapulted their fashion icon status. Soon, they were seen at every major fashion event, and were heavily photographed by the paparazzi, always rocking a boho chic look and carrying an iconic handbag.

Between 2006 and 2007, the twins launched two fashion brands: The Row and Elizabeth & James. The Row, the twins’ high fashion couture house, was named for London’s Savile Row, while Elizabeth & James was a contemporary clothing brand that was inspired by the twins’ love of vintage fashion. The idea behind the creation of The Row came about in 2005 when Ashley challenged herself to create the perfect white tee.
Mary-Kate and Ashley won the CFDA award for Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2012 and 2015, as well as the Accessories Designer of the Year in 2014.
Outside of their fashion labels, the twins are known for iconic and memorable streetwear. As the pair are fiercely private, they often hustle from event to event, taxi to building, without stopping long enough for the perfect pap-shot.
The duo's sense of style began to bleed over into other fashion brands as well. Fendi had discontinued their iconic Twins tote, but when the Mary-Kate and Ashley began wearing it out and about, the brand brought the silhouette back in rotation.
From the mid-aughts and on, the twins could be seen in what was called boho-chic, which included oversized outfits, large sweaters, and oversized hobo bags clinging to their small frames. While their style has slowly gained a sense of refinement in the 2020s, their iconic street style inspired a generation of fashion lovers to push the boundaries of what it means to dress against type.
The Iconic Bag Collection of the Olsen Twins

The twins carried an array of Balenciaga bags from different collections and in different colors.
Chanel Pink Python Classic Double Flap Jumbo
While the Olsen Twins are not often seen wearing Chanel, the first Met Gala they were invited to was a dedication the legacy of the French fashion house. What is so admirable about the Olsen Twins is dedication to vintage fashion and actually using their bags for their daily to-dos. A fixture of the Olsen Twin closet is the iconic Kelly bag in black. Most often seen carried by Mary-Kate, the very worn-in (emphasis on worn), Kelly bag is an inspiration to bohemian and vintage fashion lovers alike. Ashley can often be seen wearing an oversized Kelly bag.
Hermès Blue Saphir Lizard Constance Mini
Always showing an appreciation of vintage exotics, be it in their personal collection or on The Rows’ shelves, Mary-Kate was seen rocking an iconic Emerald Green crocodile Constance. Enjoy this just as luxurious exotic Constance, here crafted from an iconic Blue Saphir shade.

Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas Montsouris MM
The twins were not often seen carrying bags with obvious logos or monograms, sticking to bags of one primary color, often with no discernable motifs. More recently, the pair has been photographed with bags featuring the iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are considered fashion icons because of their long-standing influence on both street style and high fashion. After transitioning from child actors to designers, they reshaped modern minimalism, while also becoming known for their effortless, bohemian-inspired personal style.
The Olsen Twins founded The Row in 2006, a luxury fashion house known for minimalist tailoring and quiet luxury, and Elizabeth & James in 2007, a contemporary brand inspired by vintage fashion and everyday wear.
Their signature style blends oversized silhouettes, neutral palettes, vintage pieces, and well-worn luxury accessories. Often described as boho-chic or quiet luxury, their look embraces intentional imperfection and timeless design.
Some of the most iconic bags associated with the Olsen Twins include the Balenciaga City Bag, Hermès Kelly and Constance bags, oversized Gucci totes, and select Chanel Classic Flaps. Their preference leans toward slouchy, oversized, and well-loved bags rather than pristine or logo-heavy styles.
Mary-Kate Olsen’s heavily worn Balenciaga Bag became iconic because of its unapologetically distressed appearance. Covered in stains, pen marks, and signs of daily use, it challenged traditional ideas of luxury and became a defining symbol of early 2000s boho-chic fashion.
Absolutely. Through The Row, the twins continue to influence modern fashion with understated luxury, impeccable tailoring, and a rejection of fast trends. Their personal style and design philosophy remain highly influential in the luxury fashion world.
