Chrome Hearts was founded in 1988 by Richard Stark and John Bowman in Los Angeles, California, as the duo were unable to find the style of leather jackets they wanted to wear. Prior to starting the business together, Stark merchandised top-grade raw leather, and Bowman manufactured leather goods; Leonard Kamhout, a sterling silver jeweler, would end up joining the duo not long after.

The three gained their first bought of exposure thanks to the previously aforementioned zombie movie, aptly titled Chopper Chicks in Zombietown. The working title of the film was “Chrome Hearts,” which Stark would end up utilizing to name the brand.

The trio was hired as costume designers for the film, which starred then girlfriend of Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. Jones took a liking to the brand and their pieces and began wearing them while performing. This led to other popular rock acts of the time like Motley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses to wear the brand as well. Seemingly overnight, Chrome Hearts had become the go-to rockstar uniform of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

In 1992, Chrome Hearts was presented with the CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year Award. They were presented with the award by music icon Cher, who loved the brand and sported a full Chrome Hearts look during the ceremony. While the award only brought Chrome Hearts more awareness and popularity, Stark almost skipped the awards ceremony as he had never heard of the CFDA.

The three would split in 1994, with Stark and his wife Laurie maintaining control of the brand. A mere two years later, Chrome Hearts’ first flagship store opened in New York City, with storefronts expanding to Los Angeles, Miami, China, and most famously Japan. Chrome Hearts obtained a large following in Japan, thanks to Comme des Garçon’s Rei Kawakubo. Kawakubo featured Chrome Hearts pieces in Japan’s Comme des Garçon location, bringing the brand more international awareness.
