Hong Hao: BLACK & MULTICOLOR EMBELLISHED SATIN LADY DIOR MINI

Beijing based artist Hong Hao designed the second edition of the Lady Dior Art bag, layering his foundational motifs of sarcasm and unique perception into his version. Hao uses his pieces to challenge the viewer and inspire thought beyond the norm and conventional. His best-known work includes a book of maps called The Scriptures: originally factual maps are thoughtfully reimagined through a cultural, political and satirical lens.

For his Lady Dior, Hao referenced his My Things series with a collection of mismatched buttons and beads. Through organized chaos, he makes something beautiful out of ordinary and overlooked objects.

Marguerite Humeau: IVORY 3-D PRINTED THERMOPLASTIC LADY DIOR

Marguerite Humeau designed the third edition of the Lady Art bag, putting her own artistic vision into a classically recognizable silhouette. From Cholet, France & London England. Humeau studied at the Royal College of Art in London. She is influenced by history (especially pre-history), biology, and conspiracy. She is best known for her intellectual interpretations of prehistoric biology and parallel concepts of life in the form of sculpture.

Humeau described her Lady Dior as looking like it is sculpted out of stone while simultaneously appearing to be alive. She achieved this effect through 3D printing. The bag while functional, of course, but would also look perfectly at home in a museum display.

MICKALENE THOMAS: PINK & MULTICOLOR PATCHWORK LADY DIOR MEDIUM

Designed by Mickalene Thomas, the fourth edition of the Lady Art bag featured the artist’s signature patchwork landscape of colors and textures. FromNew York and New Jersey, Thomas studied Pre-Law & Theatre Arts at Portland State University before receiving her BFA from Pratt and her MFA from the Yale School of Art. Her main influences include Black History, race, gender, sexuality, and feminism.

She is best known for her mixed media portraits imagined in unexpected materials, like her take on the lady Dior bag. Although influenced by Monet’s landscapes, the design exudes femininity and power- a style distinctly Mickalene.

KŌHEI NAWA: RED & BLACK VINYL LADY DIOR MEDIUM

For the fifth edition of the Lady Dior Art project, Dior enlisted Osaka native Kōhei Nawa to create his version of the iconic Lady Dior Bag. Nawa studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan and is mainly influenced by biology, science, technology, and sensory perception. He is best known for his sculptural interpretation of everyday objects as cellular particles imagined in intricate mixed media materials.

Nawa’s take on the Lady Dior bag references his series titled Bio-Matrix and is designed to feel organic and alive while maintaining the unsettling essence of something technological.

SPENCER SWEENEY: BLACK & MULTICOLOR EMBROIDERED LADY DIOR MEDIUM

For the first edition of Dior’s Lady Art Project, they tapped New York based multimedia artist Spencer Sweeney. From Philadelphia, PA, Sweeney studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until graduating to New York City where he studied nightlife as a DJ. His pieces are largely experimental, from paintings to immersive experiential environments.

Sweeney’s work is characterized by its raw materiality, as we can see in his take on the Lady Dior. We can also see evidence of Sweeney’s main influences, like jazz, pop culture, art, and history in his Lady Dior bag.
