Prada: The Authority of Elevated Style
The Origins of a Legacy Brand
The Prada brand was established in 1913 by Mario Prada, who first opened a store in Milan focusing their products on travel trunks and leather goods. Because of the attention to detail and impeccable quality, Prada was recognized by the Italian Royal House, and in 1919, they were named their official supplier. This privilege also allowed the use of the House of Savoy Coat of Arms in Prada’s logo.
Mario was adamant about not having the women in his life working at all, much less for the family business, so he maintained creative direction and ownership up until 1977. After his grandsons declined to take over for Mario once he reached retirement age, his granddaughter, Miuccia, stepped in to take ownership and creative direction.
Miuccia had no formal fashion training up until this point. She studied political science in school and was heavily involved in the feminist movement in Italy at that time. Because of her eye for functionality, incorporation of feminine touches, and emphasis on quality, the Prada brand has become world-renowned. Prada is still (even after over 100 years of being in business) the authority of utilitarian but quirky style. Other brands under the Prada group include Miu Miu, Church’s, and Car Shoe.
Creative Direction: Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons
Miuccia Prada took over in 1977 and has been the sole designer of the brand since then. In 2020, she extended a co-creative director role to Raf Simons. The combination of Prada's classic sensibility and Simon's modern edge has taken the brand to new levels of popularity and interest.
Prada’s Iconography: Motifs & Materials
The Iconic Triangle Logo
Once Prada was chosen as the official supplier of the Italian Royal House, the brand was granted permission to incorporate the House of Savoy coat of arms and knotted rope details into their logo. The triangle motif has been utilized on their garments, shoes, bags, and accessories ever since.
The Signature “Prada Green”
The fashion house is recognized for creating luxurious designs in rich pigmented hues. When Miuccia opened her first boutique in 1983, the walls were painted an icy seafoam green color to counteract the neutral colors of the clothing. “Prada Green” is considered an important value of the brand’s aesthetic and is incorporated into Prada flagship locations, fragrance and beauty products, and packaging.
Exceptional Leathers
The fashion house, since its inception 100 years ago, has always maintained excellent quality leathers in different varieties. Saffiano leather is crosshatched with a waxy finish which is ideal for everyday use and known to resist wear & tear exceptionally well. Vitello Daino leather is a calfskin processed in order to maintain the same durability and feel as deerskin leather. Nappa leather is made from lambskin and is supple to the touch. A Prada signature is their Nappa Gaufe leather, featuring extremely precise ruched detailing throughout the designs of some of their most iconic bags.
Nylon / Re-Nylon
Prada’s leather goods have always been of the utmost quality, but they’ve also popularized a functional material: nylon. Under the creative direction of Miuccia, the Vela backpack was introduced in 1988. The bag was constructed with water-resistant nylon called “Pocono’ which was originally used to make military tents. Incorporating durable material into the luxury world was a unique offering at the time, and now the material is seen as iconic as any of their leather options.
In 2020, Prada relaunched popular nylon styles using recycled materials with a collection called Re-Nylon Re-edition 2000 and 2005. The collection consisted of mini bags, messengers, and other accessories revamped for the modern customer interested in the fashion industry’s efforts regarding sustainability.
Special Materials
While Prada is considered a brand focused on classics, Miuccia has successfully incorporated on-trend special materials into some of its limited edition and seasonal designs. Some popular textiles used are satin with embellished crystals, wool, denim, crocodile, and snakeskin.
Iconic Prada Bags: A Guide to Their Most Beloved Styles
Galleria
The Galleria tote is considered one of the most iconic styles Prada has to offer. Named after the first store in Milan that Miuccia opened in 2007, the bag features two handles and two zippers. The Galleria is traditionally made of ultra-durable Saffiano leather. The rectangular shape and style are versatile for everyday use while maintaining a luxurious look with any outfit.
Cleo
The Cleo bag is a newer silhouette that debuted in the Spring/Summer of 2021 but has gained popularity from its playful design and sleekness. The shoulder bag is crescent-shaped and comes in an understated smooth leather and also a crystal embellished version, perfect for a night out.
Re-Nylon Backpack
The Vela backpack was a staple Miuccia created in the 80s utilizing military tent fabric. The Re-Nylon edition of the backpack was introduced in 2019 sharing the same functional pocket and zippers. The only difference is that the Re-Nylon backpacks are made of a material called Econyl, which is sourced from recycled ocean plastic.
Re-Edition 2005
This handbag style was introduced in 2019 in the Re-nylon textile as a small shoulder bag with a durable chain, small removable pouch, embossed tag, and Saffaino trim along the bottom. Currently considered an on-trend style, the bag appeals to many and comes in a variety of muted or bright shades.
Cahier
The word cahier in French translates to ‘notebook’, which is exactly what this iconic crossbody looks like. It’s constructed with two-tone leather and a metal buckle detailing that mimics the look of a leatherbound journal.
Double Tote
With a similar look to the Galleria, the Double Tote doesn’t feature two zippers, meaning both openings for the bag are open at all times. With a detachable shoulder strap and luggage tag, this bag is also considered one of Prada’s most popular and emphasizes the brand’s commitment to functional style.

The Galleria tote and the Re-Edition 2005 are among Prada’s most iconic bags. The Galleria is loved for its structured elegance, while the Re-Edition is a Y2K-era revival that’s popular among younger shoppers.
