As if to prove that not everything with a Chanel tag must be worn only by the haughty crowd, or only to the haughtiest of affairs, Karl Lagerfeld’s Fall 2014 ready-to-wear debut made a convincing case for Chanel in even the most mundane of places–the supermarket included. Set against a built-to-fit grocery store setting, the catwalk introduced a wide variety of less swanky (case in point: Cara Delevingne opened in a battered athleisure set and tennis shoes) and tongue-in-cheek prompted, yet highly luxurious and sometimes obscure garb and accessories. This milk carton silhouette, as well as the hero egg carton tote, files under the latter descriptor. It was constructed from high-gloss, black patent leather in the shape of a milk carton, with signature diamond stitching and ‘CC’ embossing on each side. In true Chanel fashion, it’s also equipped with a leather-threaded chain-link strap that can be doubled up or worn at full length. If there’s anything to be learned, it’s that Lagerfeld hates being taken too seriously, fashion is not something to be restrained to couture runways, and that no grocery run should be complete without a carton of milk and a chic Chanel shoulder piece.
