The Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami 2025 Revival
The Murakami Collab Is Trending Again: Here's How WGACA is Leading the Charge
Fashion trends have a way of recycling, and with Y2K making a major comeback, it's the perfect time to highlight the iconic Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collaboration from the 2000s. This beloved collection, known for its vibrant, playful prints, has recently been re-released by Louis Vuitton, bringing these timeless designs back into the spotlight. The collaboration continues to thrive in the resale market, and with exclusive, collectible pieces from the original collaboration available here, What Goes Around Comes Around offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of fashion history.
The Original LV x Murakami Collaboration
One of artist Takashi Murakami’s inspirations is a neighborhood called Harajuku, located in Shibuya, Japan. This part of Shibuya is well-known for its colorful street art and liveliness for Japanese youth fashion. Its inspiration is visible in the acidic drip of the Panda design and the rainbow effect of the iconic Multicolore Monogram. The vibrancy of Murakami’s art and Louis Vuitton’s catalogue of staple pieces led to unlimited creativity. A little over twenty years ago in Spring 2003, the first collaboration between the artist and fashion house was born at the helm of creative director Marc Jacobs. Jacobs wanted to attract a younger audience to Louis Vuitton which intertwined perfectly with Murakami’s playful art.
LV x Murakami Re-Edition Collection
After the original collaboration saw decades of success and popularity, it’s no surprise that this iconic partnership is now being reimagined. As early as 2024, buzz of the collection began to sound for vintage and fashion lovers alike when brand ambassador Zendaya was photographed casually strutting a Soft Trunk from the collaboration. Louis Vuitton capitalized on the collaboration’s hype with a themed pop-up event in a few cities including New York City, allowing the public to experience the re-edition collection firsthand.
On January 3, 2025, we got our first look at the complete Spring/Summer re-edition collection. The striking collection includes everything from bags and small leather goods to shoes and accessories, with each piece offering an ideal blend of the new and the original. A perfect example is how the re-edition merges Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Empreinte with Murakami’s vibrant Panda design whereas at the time of the original 2003 collaboration, Monogram Empreinte was not yet a material in the brand’s lineup.
This collection creates a seamless fusion for the new generation of luxury lovers who also appreciate timeless vintage. While the re-edition includes reinvented designs such as Blossoms, as seen on the Neverfull MM, we also see a resurgence of the classic Monogram Multicolore on some of their new staple bags like the Coussin and Twist. Additionally, the Panda design, as seen on the Jane Monogram Superflat Notebook MM.
